Summer Bridge Program at 
Saint Paul College

The Summer Bridge is designed to help you be successful in college-level courses in the fall and to ease your transition to college. Whether you are recent high school graduate or a student returning to school after time away, this program is designed to be a free* alternative to developmental education courses, saving you time and money. Summer Bridge will help ease the transition to college life by providing you opportunity to build your confidence as a scholar while networking with fellow students and Saint Paul College staff and faculty.

Enhance Your Skills and Knowledge
Program courses are focused on building knowledge and skills in reading, writing, and/or math. You will also gain success strategies such as time management, study skills, technology skills, and financial literacy. With individualized support from Saint Paul College faculty and staff, this program will not only help you become a stronger student, but can help you focus on the road ahead, potentially saving you time and money.

Meet Fellow Students
The program enrolls a small cohort of students, and will provide an opportunity for you to get to know other college students as you work, learn, think, and have fun together through an online format.

If you meet all the program requirements, you will receive a $150 scholarship toward your fall semester tuition.

Course Descriptions

Reading
In the reading 16-hour “mini-course” you will learn, refresh and practice skills required to be a successful college reader. You will improve your reading comprehension by learning and practicing active reading and learning strategies such as annotating, note taking, building vocabulary, and developing test taking skills. You will demonstrate understanding of a variety of college reading materials through writing, quizzing, discussion, and a final exam. At the end of the course, participants will complete a post assessment, which, combined with your course performance and instructor recommendation, will determine your fall reading placement.

Writing
The writing 16-hour “mini-course” will help students prepare to participate successfully in college writing courses. Participants will review and practice a range of writing skills, including producing essays with effective paragraphs, authentic voice, and sentence variety. In addition, students will learn to use writing as a tool for both improving study skills and responding to readings. At the end of the course, participants will complete a post assessment, which, along with the instructor’s recommendations, will determine their fall semester writing course placement.

Math
The math 16-hour summer class will help students prepare to participate successfully in higher level math courses. Participants will review and practice a range of mathematical skills, including manipulating and factoring algebraic expressions, graphing linear equations, solving equations involving first and second degree polynomials as well as rational and radical expressions, and understanding the properties of a function. In addition, students will learn study strategies, computer skills, and identify academic resources at the College. At the end of the course, participants will complete a post assessment, which, along with the instructor’s recommendations, will determine their fall semester math course placement.
